Tucson Shade Posts
The part of a sail you don't notice until it fails: steel posts and the concrete that holds them.
Tucson Shade Sails has post crews that set steel shade posts and concrete footings for sails across Tucson. A tensioned sail pulls hard on every corner, and a gust multiplies that pull, so the post and footing carry most of the risk.
Tucson soil often hides caliche, a cement-like layer that can stop a hand auger cold. We drill with equipment that cuts through it rather than settling for a shallow hole.
Arizona law requires a call to Arizona 811 before digging or drilling. Locators get two full working days to respond, and we don't drill a single post footing until every utility on the ticket has answered.
Holes drilled to the depth and width the load calls for, caliche included.
Posts braced at a slight outward rake and held while concrete cures.
Hard layers broken through, not used as an excuse for a shallow footing.
Paint and flags from the Arizona 811 ticket checked before any hole is started.
| Item | What we check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Steel size | Wall thickness and diameter for sail area and height | Thin posts bend under load |
| Footing depth | Set by post height, sail size and soil | Shallow footings lean over time |
| Post rake | A few degrees leaning away from the sail | The post ends up plumb under tension |
| Finish | Powder coat or galvanizing | Resists rust and fading in the sun |
If you have posts from an old sail, we check them for rust at the base, lean and wobble before reusing them. Many older posts were set in footings too shallow for the sail they carry, so a new sail may mean new posts.
It depends on post height, sail area and soil. Larger sails and taller posts need deeper footings, and we confirm the depth in your estimate.
Caliche is a hard, cemented soil layer common around Tucson. It makes drilling slower but can't be skipped; the footing still needs full depth.
Yes. Powder-coated steel comes in many colors, and dark bronze and black are the most common choices.
Yes, we can set posts and footings by themselves when the sail layout is already decided.
